What to Ask at an Implant Consultation in Chicago

A consultation is a planning appointment. The imaging, the number of implants, the material of the final teeth and the fee all get decided in it, and most of what patients regret later is something that was not asked at that table rather than something that was refused. The published ranges for implant treatment in this market run from about $3,000 to $5,000 for a single tooth with its crown to about $15,000 to $30,000 per arch for an All-on-4, and a quote is only comparable to another quote when both are itemised. This is the checklist, in the order the questions arise. Chicago Dental Implants is a free matching service, not a dental practice; the plan and the fee come from the dentist.

Before the appointment: what to bring

Bring the things that change the plan. A written list of which teeth are missing, which are failing, and when each was lost or became a problem is more useful than a description. Add whether you wear a denture and how it fits, and any implant or graft work already done in the same area.

Bring a copy of your dental plan and its benefit schedule rather than the card alone, because the schedule is where exclusions and annual maximums are written. Bring the names and doses of every medicine you take, your allergies, whether you smoke, and any medical history that affects healing or bleeding.

Finally, bring any imaging you already have. A recent scan that the practice can use may be a line saved, and it gives you something concrete to ask about at the start of the conversation.

Imaging, and who reads it

Ask which scans the plan will be based on and what each one is for. Radiographs show what is there; a CT or cone-beam scan shows bone volume and where nerves and sinuses sit, which is what the implant positions are planned against. Planning imaging is a published line item of about $100 to $500, and it is worth knowing whether it sits inside the quoted fee.

The graft question is answered from that scan, not from the tooth count. Where the bone is too thin, a graft or a sinus lift is done first and carries its own healing time before the implant stage.

Two more questions belong here: who reads the images and plans the positions, and can you have a copy of the images and the written plan. A practice that will not share the record of your own treatment is a practice worth thinking about.

Who places the implant and who makes the tooth

Chicago practices divide into three rough groups: general offices that restore implants and refer the surgery, periodontal and oral-surgery groups that place them, and full-arch clinics that do the whole sequence in one place. Whichever you are sitting in, ask which clinician places the implant, which one fits the final tooth, and whether the same person follows the case throughout.

Illinois dentists are licensed by the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation, and sedation carries its own permit level, so ask which permit the dentist holds if sedation is part of the plan.

Also ask who answers if something needs adjusting after the final fitting, and where the laboratory work is done, because a prosthesis made elsewhere adds a link to the chain between you and the person who can fix it.

The itemised fee, line by line

The single most useful thing to leave with is a quote broken into its parts. A bundled arch price is not wrong, but it cannot be compared with another practice's number unless both are opened up.

Ask whether the total is fixed for the whole plan or can move once treatment starts.

Warranty, remakes and what voids cover

Ask for the warranty in writing and for the answer to one blunt question: what happens if an implant does not integrate, or a prosthesis has to be remade. The reply tells you whether the risk sits with the practice or with you.

Then ask what would void the cover. Maintenance appointments and home care are common conditions in these documents, so the review schedule and the warranty are really one conversation. Ask how long the cover runs, whether it applies to the implant, the prosthesis or both, and where you go for repairs if the treating dentist is unavailable.

If the terms are verbal, ask for them on paper. A warranty is only worth what the written version says.

The day of surgery and the days after

Ask what the appointment itself involves, how long it takes, and whether you leave with temporary teeth. Some full-arch cases load a temporary bridge on the day of surgery, with the final arch following once healing is complete. Some single-implant sites are left with something simpler.

Ask what to expect in the first days afterwards and which symptoms are worth calling about, who to contact out of hours, and how quickly a review is arranged. Ask whether an escort is required, and if so, arrange the person before you book the date rather than afterwards.

Also ask what the healing period means for eating and for work, because osseointegration commonly takes three to six months, and the plan should account for ordinary life during it.

Ten questions worth writing down

How many implants are you proposing, and what about my case decides that number. Which scans will be taken, and are they in the price. Do I need a graft or a sinus lift. Who places the implants and who makes the final teeth. What do I wear while healing. Is the price fixed for the whole plan. What does the itemisation include and exclude. What is the warranty, and what voids it. How many follow-up visits are included. Who do I call out of hours.

Take them in writing and note the answers at the table. If an answer is not available, ask when it will be, and what has to happen first.

This site is an independent matching service, not a dental practice. We introduce you to licensed local implant dentists at no charge, and the plan and the itemised fee come from the dentist.

Frequently asked questions

What should I bring to an implant consultation?

A list of missing and failing teeth with rough dates, your medicine list and allergies, any imaging you already have, and your dental plan's benefit schedule rather than just the card. Those four items decide most of the conversation.

Should I get a second quote?

It helps when both quotes are itemised. Two arch prices that bundle different things cannot be compared. Ask each practice for the same breakdown, including grafting, extractions, imaging and follow-up visits.

Who is licensed to place implants in Illinois?

Dentists are licensed by the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation, and sedation carries its own permit level. Ask which clinician places the implant, who makes the final tooth, and which permit the dentist holds if sedation is planned.

Is a warranty included in the price?

Sometimes, and the terms vary. Ask what is covered, how long it runs, what would void it, and whether it applies to the implant, the prosthesis or both. Verbal assurances are worth less than the written document.

Dental Implants services in Chicago

All On 4 Implants

All-on-4 is a full-arch option: four implants placed in the jaw, carrying a fixed arch of teeth. Published 2025-2026 United States cost guides put it at $15,000 - $30,000 per arch, with higher-end zirconia arches quoted above that.

Full Mouth Dental Implants

Full mouth implants means rebuilding both arches. Published 2025-2026 United States guides carry per-arch figures rather than a both-arches figure, so a two-arch plan is compared arch by arch, itemised.

Single Tooth Implants

A single implant replaces one tooth: a fixture in the jaw, an abutment, and a crown on top. Published 2025-2026 United States guides put the finished tooth at $3,000 - $5,000, with some guides to $6,000 where a graft is needed.

Implant Supported Dentures

An implant-supported denture is held by two to four implants and still comes out for cleaning. Published 2025-2026 United States guides put it at $6,000 - $15,000 per arch, against $15,000 - $30,000 per arch for a fixed full arch.

Bone Grafting

A graft rebuilds bone where the ridge has shrunk too far for an implant. Published 2025-2026 United States guides put bone graft or ridge augmentation at $600 - $3,000 per site, and the decision comes from the CT scan rather than from how many teeth were lost.

Implant Maintenance

Implants need cleaning and review after they are fitted. Peri-implantitis - inflammation around the implant - is the failure mode that follow-up appointments are looking for, and it is the reason the aftercare side of a quote deserves the same attention as the surgery.
